The University of Wisconsin-Madison, Division of Information Technology (DoIT), Wide Area Network (WAN) is seeking an enthusiastic and talented person for this position. The Research Network Engineer position is responsible for providing advanced network and cyberinfrastructure engineering support for research, administrative, instructional and outreach activities related to several major wide-area networks (WAN) including: the University of Wisconsin System Network interconnecting Wisconsin's 26 affiliated public universities and colleges to each other and the Internet; regional and metropolitan optical networks including the Broadband Optical, Research, Education and Science Network (BOREAS-Net), Northern Tier Network - North Dakota (NTN-ND) and Metropolitan Unified Fiber Network (MUFN); and various UW-Madison off-campus research projects, departments and facilities. The position also provides consulting and advanced network technical support to campus researchers in pursuit and/or execution of network-intensive research grant activities that require connectivity to the networks we support.

* Minimum 7 years of experience in information technology or telecommunications field. * Minimum 5 years of IP networking experience with demonstrable proficiency in designing, deploying, configuring and maintaining optical transmission systems and data network switching and routing equipment in a large-scale, TCP/IP and Ethernet-based WAN environment. * Excellent teamwork and relationship building skills. * Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills with colleagues and groups at various levels. * Excellent problem solving skills including the ability to diagnose and provide solutions for problems with limited outside assistance and new, not-previously encountered issues. * In-depth knowledge and experience with optical networking fundamentals and at least one implementation (e.g. Cisco IOS, Juniper JUNOS) of network communication technologies, concepts and protocols such as Ethernet, MPLS, TCP/IP, interior/exterior gateway routing protocols (e.g. OSPF, RIP, BGP), SNMP, Netflow, network security devices and software-defined networking.
